When choosing a scented candle, the fragrance may be the first thing you notice. But what the candle is actually made from matters just as much.
Two of the most commonly used candle waxes are soy wax and paraffin wax. They may look similar once they are poured into a beautiful jar, but their origins and burning characteristics are very different.
At BURNING MECHANICS, this is one of the choices we don't compromise on.
We choose 100% natural soy wax and do not use paraffin.
But why?
Where Does the Wax Come From?
The simplest place to start is the source.
Soy wax is made from soybean oil, making it a plant-derived and renewable wax.
Paraffin wax is petroleum-derived, meaning it comes from the petroleum refining process.
For us, that difference matters.
A candle is something you intentionally bring into your living space and burn for hours while you read, listen to music, relax or spend time with yourself. We believe the materials used in that candle should be chosen with the same care as the experience it is meant to create.
That is why BURNING MECHANICS uses natural soy wax rather than petroleum-based paraffin wax.
Why Do We Avoid Paraffin Wax?
Paraffin is widely used in the candle industry because it is inexpensive, readily available and versatile.
But being common doesn't necessarily make a material the right choice for every candle.
When paraffin candles burn, the combustion process can produce soot and various gaseous and particulate emissions. Scientific studies of candle emissions have detected compounds including benzene, toluene and other combustion-related substances.
A peer-reviewed study specifically comparing soywax and paraffin candles found a considerable amount of soot from the paraffin candles tested, while little or no soot was observed from the soywax candles tested.
This is one of the reasons we don't use paraffin in our candles.
Not as a blend.
Not as a hidden percentage.
Not as a wick coating.
0% paraffin.
We believe that if a candle is being created as part of someone's everyday moments of calm, it should not compromise on the materials used to make it.
Why We Choose 100% Natural Soy Wax
Soy wax gives us the foundation we want for our candles.
It is plant-derived, renewable and biodegradable, and research has shown promising burning characteristics compared with paraffin.
But our choice isn't based on one feature alone.
We choose soy wax because it aligns with the kind of candle we want BURNING MECHANICS to represent:

Every BURNING MECHANICS candle is made using 100% natural soy wax rather than petroleum-based waxes.
Does Soy Wax Burn Cleaner?
This is one of the areas where soy wax has a meaningful advantage.
In the 2002 study mentioned earlier, researchers compared candles made from hydrogenated soybean oil with paraffin and beeswax candles. The paraffin candles produced considerable soot, while little or no soot was observed from the soywax candles tested.
The same research also found that the soywax candles burned more slowly than the paraffin candles used in the experiment.
This doesn't mean that a candle can never produce soot simply because it contains soy wax.
The wick, flame, airflow and burning conditions still matter.
In fact, this is exactly why we call ourselves BURNING MECHANICS.
A candle isn't simply wax and fragrance. Its performance depends on the mechanics of how all those components work together.
The Wick Matters Too
Choosing the right wax is only one part of making a good candle.
The wick has to work properly with the wax, fragrance load and vessel.
A poorly matched wick can create an oversized flame, excessive soot or an uneven melt pool, regardless of the wax being used.
At BURNING MECHANICS, we use sustainable cotton and paper-mix wicks and carefully match the components of our candles to achieve the burning performance we are looking for.
This attention to burning performance is not an afterthought.
It is part of the reason behind the name BURNING MECHANICS.
What About Fragrance?
A candle isn't made of wax alone.
For a scented candle, the fragrance is equally important.
This is why choosing a natural wax while ignoring the quality of the fragrance would make little sense.
At BURNING MECHANICS, our fragrances are phthalate-free and IFRA-certified, and we select export-quality raw materials for our candles.
We don't want the candle to simply smell good.
We want the complete product—from wax and fragrance to wick and container—to meet the standards we have set for ourselves.
Is a Soy Wax Candle Automatically a Good Candle?
Not necessarily.
The wax is extremely important, but it isn't the whole candle.
A good candle needs the right combination of:
- Quality wax
- Appropriate fragrance
- Correct fragrance load
- Properly selected wick
- Suitable container
- Correct pouring temperature
- Proper curing
- Correct burning instructions
That is why we don't simply buy a bag of soy wax and call the job finished.
At BURNING MECHANICS, every candle is made with proper calculations and formulas, and we allow our candles to cure for seven days. We make them in small batches rather than mass-producing them.
Why We Don't Use Soy Blends
You may have noticed candles described simply as “soy blend.”
That description alone doesn't tell you how much soy wax is actually present.
A product can contain soy wax alongside another wax and still be marketed as a soy blend.
We prefer to be straightforward.
When we say 100% Natural Soy Wax, that is what we mean.
We don't use paraffin to make the candle cheaper while relying on the word “soy” to make it sound more natural.
There is 0% paraffin in BURNING MECHANICS candles—including the wick coating.

So, Which Is Better: Soy Wax or Paraffin?
If your priority is a plant-derived, renewable wax with clean-burning characteristics, soy wax is the better choice.
Scientific research comparing soywax and paraffin has found significantly different soot behaviour, with considerably more soot observed from the paraffin candles tested in one controlled study.
Paraffin is petroleum-derived, while soy wax comes from soybean oil.
For BURNING MECHANICS, that difference is enough to make our choice very clear.
We choose soy.
Not a soy blend.
Not a hidden percentage of soy.
Not paraffin underneath a “natural” label.
